Shoma: We have a Buddha statue in our backyard, and every day our dogs, Sage and Bliss, pee right in front of it. He’s not angry at all. Just calm and peaceful about being peed in front of. That’s what I wanted to capture in the painting and how I want to be when life throws new and uncomfortable things at me. Even if people are peeing on my serenity.
Sunny: I flew straight from a Ram Dass retreat where everybody was giving out warm, soul-filling hugs to a Buddhist one. I’d thought we’d be learning compassion and open our hearts from a master like Thich Nhat Hanh. Instead I was greeted by teens shouting at us and ordering us around like a boot camp. In my heart, I was hoping to find someone a little more like this Buddha and less like Major Payne. I went in seeking this buddha and came out seeking the exit!
